Sioux Falls, SD— In partnership with the Sioux Falls Green Project, a new organization
hosting the sustainability movement, The First National Bank in Sioux Falls will turn
out the lights at its downtown headquarters (First Financial Center, at the corner of 9th
Street and Phillips Ave.) for one hour on March 28 at 8.30pm.
“We are planning to shut off all of our exterior lighting, and our interior lighting except for
the required safety lighting, for at least one hour on March 28,” says Stephanie
Gongopoulos with First National Bank in Sioux Falls.
The bank will go dark to honor Earth Hour, a global one-hour event to raise awareness
and action about environmental sustainability. In 2007, more than two million Sydney,
Australia businesses and households turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour -
sending a powerful global message that it’s possible to take action on climate change.
Just one year later, Earth Hour reached more than 50 million people in 35 countries
across 18 time zones, and the campaign shifted from a Sydney event to a global
sustainability movement.
In 2009, Earth Hour aims to reach one billion people in cities worldwide. Already, over
1,200 cities and towns across 80 countries are committed, with more coming on board
every day. You can join the movement and bring Earth Hour to your home, business or
office building on 28 March 2009 at 8:30pm.
